Dr. Alex Emerson, DVM | Fort Lauderdale Veterinarian

Dr. Alex Emerson, DVM, owner and veterinarian at Bluewater Animal Health Center in Fort Lauderdale, holding a kitten in the exam room.

When you bring your pet to Bluewater Animal Health Center, you are in good hands. Dr. Alex Emerson is the owner and lead veterinarian at our Fort Lauderdale clinic, and he has spent his career doing one thing: getting to the bottom of what is actually going on with your pet and telling you straight.

“I listen carefully, I examine slowly, and I try to give clear answers.”
Dr. Alex Emerson — Owner & Lead Veterinarian

Dr. Emerson came to small animal medicine after 15 years in performance horse veterinary care. What he brought with him, beyond the orthopedic and diagnostic depth, is a belief he carries into every appointment: “I think veterinary medicine is the most human job there is, even though our patients are animals. We get to know our clients and their families at some of the best and some of the worst times, and I feel very honored to be part of that.

How Dr. Emerson Practices

For pets managing chronic or complex conditions — orthopedic pain, recurring skin and allergy issues, gastrointestinal problems, long-term illness — the difference between a rushed appointment and a thorough one is everything. Dr. Emerson takes the time to understand your pet’s full history, walks you through what he is seeing, and makes sure you leave with a real plan and a clear picture of what comes next.

1
Listen
Every appointment starts by hearing you out, fully and without rushing. Your observations matter clinically.
2
Examine
A thorough, methodical exam that considers the full picture, not just the presenting complaint.
3
Explain
You leave with real answers, a clear plan, and the confidence that comes from understanding exactly what is happening.

Deep Roots in Veterinary Medicine

Before joining Bluewater Animal Health Center, Dr. Emerson built a 15-year career as a performance horse veterinarian. That work demands precision. Competition horses are high-value, high-performance athletes whose owners notice small changes in movement, energy, and behavior, and a vet who misses the early signs of a developing problem pays for it quickly in credibility. Dr. Emerson learned to look carefully, trust what he saw, and communicate clearly with owners who expected straight answers under pressure. That same discipline now shapes how he cares for dogs and cats, with particular attention to large breed orthopedic care and senior pet wellness.

Getting to Know Dr. Emerson

Dr. Emerson grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada. He doesn’t say “Eh?” anymore, but he still plays hockey every week. He and his wife, Wendy, like to spend as much time as possible on the water, boating and fishing. Fort Lauderdale, with its year-round water access and its genuinely global community, felt like the right place to put down roots — and to build something worth being proud of. He is, by his own description, a happy-go-lucky nerd — someone who comes home from a conference and is excited to try something new on tomorrow’s cases. That restlessness is a feature, not a bug.

On the Water
Boating the Intracoastal and fishing offshore and in the Everglades with Wendy whenever Fort Lauderdale cooperates.
🏒
At the Rink
He skates at rinks across South Florida every week, and cheers from the stands at his sons’ hockey games.
